Doubled Up

So my trusty ol' Canon PowerShot S400 finally bit the dust on me. It just up and stopped reading the memory card... which I'm pretty sure is an important thing for digital cameras. I guess I couldn't complain too much since it took quite a few beatings over the last 4 years. And since I liked it so much... I bought the new and improved model of the same camera!

The Canon PowerShot 850 has treated me well so far. I doubled up on the number of pixels in the sensor which is great... but that's not the best difference between the two. The 850 can take full sized videos and does a great job of it! I'm looking forward to using this guy for the next 4 years!

If you're in the market to get a new digital camera... make sure to get a Canon! You won't regret it!

Zaca Fire... No Joke!

Well, the Zaca Fire that I just posted about is quickly becoming a little more serious for those of us here in Santa Barbara. I just received and email from someone who had attended a Town Hall meeting last night here and it appears as though the front of the fire is about 5 miles from the top of the mountain ridge here in Santa Barbara. And if the right wind is blowing when the fire reaches there... it's REAL serious. Check out the last line in this Wiki article. The pictures in that article give you an idea of how full of fire fuel these last 5 miles are.

You can see from these pictures that the amount of burned acres has jumped quite significantly in the last few days. In my first post... they were saying 56,200 and as of this morning they are reporting 72,000 acres. Interesting that a fire that is supposed to be 68% contained is still marching ahead that strongly! The area in bright red is the active burn area... and the light pink below that is Santa Barbara. Althought the homes in Santa Barbara go well up onto that mountain ridge between the fire and the city. I mean... just look at the path that fire has taken... it's just bearing down on Santa Barbara like it knows where it's going.

Here are some links for any of you local folk. Make sure to check them out... as they are already trying to prepare Santa Barbara residents for an evacuation.

Blogger And GMail

Here's a cool little trick that I learned yesterday that maybe a tiny few of you might actually find useful. When I first made the switch on Blogger from their original sign-on to the Google Account based login... I wasn't using GMail at all. So I created a Google account using my own personal email address. Since then, I've gotten a GMail account and created an iGoogle page... which makes it really easy to move around the different Google applications without having to log in to all of them over and over. One problem existed though... I still had my older Google account that I had to use for Blogger. Anytime I wanted to post something I would actually be logged out of my new Google account and into my older one... requiring me to log back in with my newer account after I was finished with Blogger.

You'd think Google and Blogger would have figured this out... but they actually point fingers back and forth through a couple web links... and then the actual solution doesn't work! Ha! Anyway here is the trick I found on a blog all about Blogger... you can invite your newer GMail based account to be an administrator on your blog... once both your old and new account are set up as administrators on your blog... you simply remove the older account from the blog. It's actually quite simple.

Now iGoolge, GMail, and Blogger all log in automatically without me having to do it... and even when I'm making comments on other people's Blogger blogs. Sweet!

Here are the steps:
1. Add a second account, as a blog member.
2. From the second account, accept membership.
3. Make the new member an administrator.
4. From the new administrator account, remove the old account.

Zaca Fire

So for the last month there has been a fire burning here in California just north of Santa Barbara that they've named the Zaca Fire. It's been burning since July 4th and it won't be fully contained until Sept. 7th!! The constant reminder for us here in Santa Barbara that something ominous is taking place close by... are the eerie orange colored afternoon skies and the ash! Everything outside is covered in layers of the white ash... and who knows what else we are breathing in!
