For A Month...

So, I'm making an interesting decision today... one that should be tough to start... but good for me in the long run.

And that decision is:

To not watch any TV or listen to any music for the month of November.

Seems kind of intense doesn't it?!?! Well, at least if you know me, it should seem intense. The idea behind this is to free myself from distraction. TV and music can sometimes simply clutter the brain by not really allowing oneself the silence it takes to hear your own thoughts and heart.

However, the idea behind this is not one of extreme rigidness and absoluteness. I am allowing myself certain provisions... such as watching a movie when I'm with friends... or music at church on Sundays... or anything involved with work. It has more to do with times when I am alone... such as in my truck or simply relaxing around the house. Times where I'm used to shutting off my brain and letting TV or music simply occupy it for a time.

So, will you hold me accountable? Do you think it makes sense? Do you think you could do it?

I could never do the music thing but I axed TV a long time ago.

Of course you can do it! Just unplug your TV and it won't be such a temptation and then hang out with Kirsten and me and we will clutter your brain instead of the music and the TV :-)

Quite an undertaking but I think that's awesome! Ever since we watched the "NOISE" video at FCA, I have been driving to and from work with no music and that time has helped me be quiet, think, pray, etc. As for the TV, I spent 18 years of my life without one and it will do you good. Besides, you're getting your month done now before the new season of "24" starts! K-Mac

Amy - Believe me... letting go of music will be the harder of the two... cause I love it too! But I just felt like it can be something that invades the silence... and that's what I'm really looking for.

Coach M - Yeah, I actually thought about that because LOST is in season and I try to watch that... but no worries thanks to my trusty DVR. I'll have 5 episodes to watch commercial free when it's all over!

wow. you are a brave brave soul!
Music is such an integral part of my life I think I would DIE without it :)
TV is overrated and is a good thing to fast!

I am excited to hear about what you discover during your vow of silence ;)

Hey Brett,
I'm Julie. I met you Friday night at high school youth group and I stumbled on your page because David has a link for you on the Elevation page.

I commend you for taking on this challenge. I hope you learn some things about yourself and use your quiet time to be productive and converse with God. Good luck!

Way to go! I did this once, and I was amazed how I lost my appetite for TV at the end.

We're watching a movie at my house tonight (G, Jen Robinson, maybe April and Brent, and Garth) ... want to join? Probably about 8 pm for the start.
